The Mystery Oil Leak
Audi A4 owners start looking for answers on a mysterious oil leak that is coming from the back of the engine somewhere. Typically, their mechanic is stumped as to the source of the leak, so they take to the Internet to find people who have this problem and discovered its cause.
First the owners look for information on recalls, certain that this must be a known problem, however this isn’t on a recall from Audi.
The Oil Leak Symptoms
Experiences with this mystery leak vary a little bit but the main problem is the same. This major oil leak is originating from the back of the engine somewhere.
Other symptoms include:
- More oil leaked after acceleration.
- After valve cover gasket replacement leak continued.
- Leak starts on starting the car.
- It begins at mileage 120,000.
- Model years 1997 through 2010 have it.
The Mystery was Solved
Some very helpful auto mechanics and consumers who fix their own cars found the solution to this oil leak problem. The leak is being generated by the timing chain tensioner on the 2.0 TSI engine in VWs and Audis of certain years.
There was no recall on this issue, oddly enough. But there was a class action suit that VW lost and they had to give cash to Audi owners of the affected vehicles. Unfortunately, that lawsuit settled in 2019 and whoever didn’t become a part of it isn’t going to be able to collect any money from it now. So, you will need to tell your mechanic what you suspect and pay for the repair yourself.
