The forward collision warning is a safety feature that generates a visual and audible alert when there’s an impending collision.
Usually, the feature warns the driver when they get too close or too fast to another car or barrier. VW Atlas and some other models will engage the brakes automatically as well. While this safety feature can be life-saving, it is not perfect.
There are complaints on the NHTSA website of the system engaging the brakes of the VW Atlas even where there were no barriers. Such an unpredictable scenario can be dangerous for drivers and other road users.
There are a few similar complaints on the NHTSA’s website, and it seems the issue is popular with 2018 and 2019 Volkswagen Atlas model year owners.
In 2020, there was a VW Front Assist class action lawsuit where the driver alleged the sudden activation of the automatic emergency braking feature without actions or reasons. The lawsuit asserts that all 2015-2019 models are too dangerous to drive because the drivers don’t know when the system will activate.
