Car noises can drive you crazy. You’re driving along with the radio off in an effort to avoid all the commercials and are left with nothing to do but stress out over a noise you hear coming from the engine compartment. Sometimes it is best to just turn the radio back on, but other times that noise needs a professional to check it out.
Car Noises
There are a lot of weird car noises, some are nothing and others are trying to tell you something serious is going on. Here are the answers to a few of them.
Popping Noises
When you hear popping noises coming from your car, it could be any one of a variety of car maladies. The most common cause is a damaged CV joint. Runner up diagnoses are: worn spark plugs, clogged fuel filter or a problem with the catalytic converter.
Clicking
Clicking sounds coming from the wheels are possibly caused by loose or damaged brake pads or calipers. But more likely it is again, the CV joints or differentials, especially if it happens on tight turns.
Loud Sound When Accelerating
When a transmission is having trouble, you’ll hear the normal revving up of the engine, but it takes a long time to go down again, if ever. It doesn’t shift into the next gear right away and leaves the engine at high RPMs.
Hissing
Hissing probably isn’t being caused by a snake in the engine compartment. It is most likely a damaged radiator hose or a loose radiator cap. Stop the car immediately and let it cool down. Make sure the car is cold before opening the hood. Whatever is hissing might pop open and spray scalding fluid.
